Placement Students: Accessing Books

The smartest way to start your search

To search for:

  • a specific book, type in the author surname and some words from the title
  • books on a topic, type your keywords and then select Books from the Limit by material type menu on the left-hand side of your results page

(Reading lists for individual modules can be accessed via Blackboard)

Renewing your books

Renew your books using the Web Catalogue

  1. Go to My Library Record.
  2. Log-in with your university username and password.
  3. Select the items you want to renew by checking the box in the renew column.
  4. Click Renew selected button. If you want to renew everything click the Renew all button.
  5. If you are successful a new date will appear. Remember to make a note of the new date.

Telephone 0121 204 4525 – please have your Library barcode number (printed on your uniCARD) ready and the book barcode numbers (printed below the date stamp label).

If you need to leave a message because the Help desk desk is busy, please make sure you give your details slowly and clearly. Do not assume that the books have been renewed until you receive confirmation.

Postal Loans

While you are on your placement you can ask the Library staff to post books out to you. You can check Library SmartSearch to make sure we have the books in stock and then please email  with the following information:

• Book title
• Author
• Class number (e.g. 658.8 MAR)
• Your name and the address where you would like the book to be sent
• Your Library barcode number (from your uniCARD)
• Your Aston email address.

All requests and further correspondence will be sent by email. It is important that you check your Aston email at least every other day to see if any books have been recalled.

Returning postal loans

You can return books in person using the self-issue machines in the Library or you can use the outside book box close to the Library entrance, when the Library is closed.

You can also return books by post but you will need to pay the return postage. Books may be returned by courier or post but the service used should give a guaranteed return within 2-3 days. All items returned should be securely packed and addressed to:

Public Services Coordinator
Library Services
Aston University
Aston Triangle

United Kingdom

Please note that you are responsible for the safe return of the book, and if it is lost while it is being returned, you will have to pay for its replacement
