Academic staff: Welcome to Library Services

Welcome to Library Services

This guide has been created for new staff to serve as a brief introduction to library services and resources. Each School at Aston University has a designated Information Specialist, who is your first contact for the library. If you have any questions about Library Services, feel free to contact them, or our Library Enquiries Team.

Borrowing library books

  • Staff can borrow 35 books at any one time
  • If you are new to the University please complete the online registration form and take this opportunity to book an appointment with your Information Specialist
  • If you need a book for longer you can renew the book by going to your Library Record.
  • If a book has been reserved by another user, please return it in time and be aware of our fines policy
  • If all copies of a book are out on loan and you would like to get hold of a copy you can reserve it
    • You may wish to consider requesting an inspection copy directly from the publisher for your own use.
  • If there is an electronic copy (e-book) click on the link and login.  E-books are exactly the same in terms of content as a printed book they are just in a different format. We buy e-books from a number of different sources, please check the help files on the specific platform or contact the Library Help desk for further help

The smartest way to start your search

To search for:

  • a specific book, type in the author surname and some words from the title
  • books on a topic, type your keywords and then select Books from the Limit by material type menu on the left-hand side of your results page

(Reading lists for individual modules can be accessed via Blackboard)

Your Information Specialist

Your Information Specialist is your primary contact with Library Services and can offer support across all Library Services, including specialised subject advice.
